Civic X Syllabus is committed to reflecting on and documenting the evolution of ideas in the civic innovation ecosystem.
Purpose + Goals
Civic X Syllabus is a roadmap to learning about civic research, civic data, civic tech, and civic design. We are certainly not the ‘end all, be all’ of what is or is not important in these spaces, but we are attempting to both document resources that individuals in these spaces would agree are ‘canon’ and promote a healthy dialogue and debate about issues and topics still in flux.
The goals of creating the syllabus are threefold:
1.
Organize our knowledge around the theory and practice of Civic X topics by creating a single space that houses key readings, tools, and resources.
2.
Identify superficial boundaries within and across Civic X topics as a means toward creating dialogue about what ‘belongs’ in these respective spaces.
3.
Create a syllabus, that could, at least in theory, be used to teach a course or workshop.
Navigating Civic X Syllabus
Civic X Syllabus is presently separated into four parts:
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Resources on the necessary pre-work we all must do before good partnerships or projects can be formed.
HOWDY PARTNER
Resources on building and sustaining Civic X partnerships that last.
GET TO WORK
Resources on creating and carrying out different kinds of Civic X projects.
TOOLBOX
Deep dives into specific tools or methods for partnership, projects, or engagement.
Each part of Civic X Syllabus contains several modules, which can be used to teach and learn a stand-alone concept. Most modules include four types of teaching and learning resources:
Key Media
Information to absorb: things to read, listen to, or watch that tell you more about the topic at hand.
Helpful Tools
Tools to use: worksheets, guidebooks, playbooks, frameworks, and the like.
Key Resources
Other resources: lists, real-world examples, and miscellaneous resources.
